Our history
18th–19th Centuries
Bryn Morfydd began life as a striking 18th-century country house, captured in a postcard around 1900. This elegant three-storey residence featured bow windows, a twin-gabled roof, and overlooked the sweeping Vale of Clwyd. The grounds included a topiary garden, copper beech tree, stone steps, and a pond — all adding to its charm. Later additions in the 1920s–30s expanded the home, including a Dutch-style walled garden, a classical pillared terrace, and a tennis court nestled in the woodland behind.
1959
The house and its 32 acres — by then in a poor state — were purchased for £4,000. Recognising its potential, the new owners transformed it into a country house hotel with modern comforts and elegant design. The grand rooms became stylish lounges and dining spaces, including the Wedgwood Room and the Windsor Bar, with a new loggia overlooking the Vale.
1960s
Opening in 1962, Bryn Morfydd quickly gained a reputation for high-quality food, service, and ambiance. Guests travelled from across North Wales and beyond to dine and celebrate, especially weddings, drawn by the stunning backdrop of the Clwydian hills.
1973
Bryn Morfydd was sold to new investors - later revealed to be backed by Guinness Brewery. Though the sale was promising, new management quickly alienated customers and staff. The hotel's hard-earned reputation began to fade.
1990
The hotel changed hands again and in 1994, the new owner commissioned a 9-hole golf course, later extended to 18. Bryn Morfydd was repositioned as a golf retreat. In 1999, the property had a new buyer, who aimed to keep it running but a fire in 2005 brought that to a halt.
2009
By 2009, the hotel was closed and sold to an architect, who planned to live there and redevelop the land with wooden holiday chalets. However, planning obstacles stalled progress. The house fell into disrepair, becoming a target for vandalism and even police training exercises.
2018
Planning permission was granted in 2018 to demolish the derelict buildings and construct a new hotel with surrounding holiday lodges. Demolition and site clearance took place in early 2019, finally removing the decaying remains of the old hotel and mews buildings.
2022
Construction began on a new vision for Bryn Morfydd: a premium holiday park rooted in the beauty of the Clwydian landscape. The new development has brought life back to the site, with high-quality holiday homes, landscaped grounds, and a respectful nod to the history beneath its foundations.
2025
Bryn Morfydd is now home to a growing collection of high-quality holiday lodges, with selected units already complete and available for ownership. Sales are underway, offering buyers the chance to be part of an exclusive new community, in the heart of the Clwydian landscape
